    Kananook Project

    Citywide Welding was tasked with addressing a critical issue at the Kananook Training Maintenance Facility project, where incorrectly cut piling starter bars jeopardised the project timeline. With tight deadlines and potential penalties looming, our team quickly mobilised and implemented a high-productivity welding solution. We ensured safety, efficiency and compliance while working within the client’s strict schedule and industry standards.

    The Challenge

    The Kananook Training Maintenance Facility project faced a critical issue when contractors cut the piling starter bars too short, threatening the project’s tight deadline. The capping beam, including forming and concrete pour, had to be completed by a specific date to avoid significant penalties. The client initially expected the welding process to take a week, believing MMAW (Manual Metal Arc Welding) was the best option, putting the project at risk of costly delays.

    The Solution

    Citywide Welding quickly assessed the situation and mobilised a skilled team to the site. Utilising Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), a high-productivity welding method, we efficiently extended the piling starter bars. We set up an exclusion zone with proper signage and procedures, ensuring the project proceeded with no delays. By implementing FCAW instead of MMAW, we optimised the process, reducing the estimated timeline from one week to three days, all within normal working hours.

    The Result

    Our welds were thoroughly tested and passed to AS1554 and ISO9606 standards with a 100% success rate, exceeding the client’s expectations. The project was completed in just three days, saving the client time, avoiding penalties and allowing further trades to complete forming and concrete work within the required five days. The client not only avoided penalties but also enhanced their reputation with the rail network authority, demonstrating efficiency and project management success.
